I was first introduced to the world of science fiction at the young age of 5 when my parents showed me Star Wars. Growing up a Star Wars geek, I honestly never thought I would fall into the life of a Trekkie. When the new movie came out in 2009, I went with my father to see it and fell in love. So I decided to take the leap and start with the original series. Needless to say, I fell absolutely in love. The old cheesy sci-fi effects mixed with surprisingly deep and emotional story lines gripped me from the very beginning. The deeper into the show I got, the more I realized I had virtually no friends that shared my passion for science fiction, and Star Trek, around. Most lived across the country so “geeking out” over it wasn’t as easy. After a quick internet search I found the USS Haven, my new nerd home.
Since joining the Haven I’ve met an amazing group of people. The warmth and acceptance from everyone has actually helped pull me out of my shell. As a shy, nerdy girl, I always had a hard time fitting in and going out on a limb to meet people. Being a part of the Haven has changed that completely! I find myself looking forward to each new event where I can slap on the trusty uniform and go have an absolute blast with a group of people who are quickly becoming both good friends and second family.
