She was placed in commission as USS HAVEN AH-12 at the Todd Erie Basin, Brooklyn, New York, on 5 May 1945, and turneds over to her first Commanding Officer, Captain T.T Patterson, USN (Ret)...(copied from para 2.)

 Uss HavenAH12-this is my story

Placed in commission during the closing months of World War II, HAVEN was one of the hospital ships sent to Korea to handle casualties there. Almost 15,000 patients were treated on board, in many cases only a few hours after they had been hit....(copied from para1)

Stationed at Inchon in August 1952, HAVEN found her facilities and personnel put to a rigorous test as the results of the bitter Bunker Hill fighting, which had just begun. Over 1200 patients were treated in a single month. In recognition of her valiant support of the United Nations battle for freedom, President Syngman Ree awarded the ship the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. On 16 September, just prior to her departure, General Lemuel Shepherd, Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corp, visited HAVEN personally to render his thanks for what he termed the "loving care" given to his troops in Korea (copied from
para 7).
.
General Shepherd, later featured on the cover of TIME Magazine in 1952, was a prominent Military leader of our time. His story is here: Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr., General, United States Marine Corps
.
HAVEN's GUARD and the Crew of the USS Tiberius will carry on the tradition of our U.S. Marine Corps, and ALL Marines Wordwide on the side of Freedom, with pride and diligence.

Freedom to be Free
by Norm Liddell

Our love for Star Trek reminds us that good science fiction usually has a moral message. There are messages in reality also. Here's one that's worth sharing.

The day after Christmas 2003 Denise & I went to the movies with my daughters and our grandkids to see Peter Pan...(good choice!)...Standing outside in line, a teen-age girl's T-shirt caught my eye. The words "Anti Flag" adorned the back. Pictured across the front was our United States Flag covered with a 'No" symbol (circle with a slash across it). I was offended. I didn't make a scene, but it really bothered me. Letting it go temporarily, I had a good time enjoying the movie with family, but it was still on my mind when the day was over.

With a bit of research on the Internet, I found out later that "Anti-Flag" is a Punk Rock group which espouses political change. They are very successful with a colorful history. Political change is, of course, an American idea.

Recalling the T-shirt I had worn to the movies that day, I hadn't thought much about it while selecting it. Dark Navy blue with white cloudy overtones running through the background, across the front our US Flag unfurling boldly into the wind, an eagle gripping the staff tightly with its talons...a symbol of freedom, hope, and justice. It's a shirt that most Americans would be proud to wear

Many of our men and women were not home this Holiday Season. The world is an angry place. Americans are always called upon to stand up for those who cannot or will not stand for themselves. Our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen leave their families and friends behind, packing their gear and following orders. They don't vote on their missions. They don't decide when to stop, or when to start. They go because it is their job to stand up and fight when our leaders deem our values or lives are in danger. They go because we asked them to go in our name.

That teenager, whose symbolism was so disrespectful, would not be free to wear her "Anti-Flag" T-shirt if so many of our brave men and women had not carried our flag into so many bloody battles. Her T-shirt was just a rock band's promotional gimmick probably designed on a napkin by group members over a beer and a smoke late one night after a practice session. Our Flag is the heritage of our country, bought and paid for with the lives of many thousands of our brothers and sisters resting in sacred places worldwide. She was free to wear her offensive T-shit only because they sacrificed their lives to ensure I was free to wear mine.

As Star Trek fans, we believe in a positive exciting future. We believe in our freedom to express ourselves in unique individual ways, even if that includes an offensive T-shirt. Our enthusiasm for Star Trek is a mirror of our enthusiasm and love for America's values. As you celebrate Star Trek, never forget the freedom that allows you to do so.

The Meaning of the U.S. Flag Ceremony
(Courtesy of RMSI Rechnology)

The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

The second fold is a symbol of our belief in the eternal life.

The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of life for the defense of our country to attain a peace throughout the world.

The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.

The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong."

The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.

The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.

The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.

The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Ghost.

When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our national motto, "In God We Trust".

"After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the Soldiers who served under General George Washington and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today."

The next time you see a flag ceremony honoring someone that has served our country, either in the Armed Forces or in our civilian services such as the Police force or Fire Department, keep in mind all the important reasons behind each and every movement. They have paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us by honoring our flag and our Country.
